Most of us have heard the term, novels and short stories. Did you know that there are other forms of writing which is based on the number of words that they contain?

What Is Flash Fiction?

Flash fiction is a genre of fiction, defined as a very short story. While there is no set word count that separates flash fiction from more traditional short stories, flash fiction stories can be as short as five words to about a thousand words on the long side however they provide a compelling plot.

What Is a Short Story?

1,000 - 7,500 Words

An average short story usually has 5,000 words and no more than 7,500. Traditionally, short stories were meant to be read in a single sitting. It is often used to describe a single event, a single episode or a series of linked incidents, or a tale of one particular character of a few characters. A short story is basically fictional prose, written in a narrative style.

What Is a Novelette?

7,500 - 19,000 Words

A novelette is also a narrative fictional prose that is often romantic or sentimental in character. A novelette is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novella. The word count is usually between 7,500 words to 19,000 words.

What Is a Novella?

19,000 - 49,999 Words

A novella is longer than a novelette and is sometimes called a long short story or a short novel and averages around 30,000 words. Unlike novels, novellas are usually not divided into chapters, and like short stories, they are often meant to be read in one sitting. They generally have a single plot line focused on a single character and are less complex than a novel but more complex than a short story. These may be realistic or satirical in nature.

The novel is one of the more common works of fiction that we encounter and averages around 60,000 to 100,000 words. A novel deals with specific human experiences over a considerable length usually through a connected sequence of events involving a group of people in a specific setting. Due to its considerable length, a novel is meant to be read over a period of days.

The longest novel in English is Marienbad My Love by Mark Leach which has about 2.5 million words.
